  22. <meta content="ReFramingl comprises an introduction, five chapters and a conclusion. The
  23. introduction describes the inception of the project in a study of writing practiceS
  24. among'a group of fiction writers, which identifies a process of self-transformation as
  25. an experience common to members of the group. Having identified this experience as
  26. the subject of study for a thesis,it gives a rationale for a choice of the work of
  27. poet and novelist Janet Frame,in that she enacts through her writing a process of
  28. subjective change that embodies the self-transformation identified as integral to
  29. creative practice. The introduction also signals the project of reading the work of
  30. Midhel de Certeau, and Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari alongside that of Frame, as
  31. theorists who offer approaches to understanding subjective trasformation.
  32.
  33. Chapter One places the work of Frame alongside that of the literary theorist and
  34. philosopher Michil de Certeau as a way of reading motivation in Frames's work. This
  35. chapter conducts a thematic survey of the novels' concerns with experiences of
  36. subjective confinement, using Certeau's figuration of language structures as sites of
  37. constraint and subversion, and linking Frame's response with Certeau's ideas of
  38. tactics and strategies.
  39.
  40. Chapter Two surveys the work of the philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari . .
  41. on processes of creative thought as they relate to narratorial practices in Frame's
  42. novels, and relates her project to their concept of becoming, via the genre of minor
  43. literature. The chapter presents an argument that Frame's writing enacts a double
  44. becoming in that her creation of altered subjective space for herself also creates
  45. possibilities of collective change.
  46.
  47. Chapter Three conducts a chronological survey of Frame's novels, identifying
  48. structural elements and linguistic approaches to the creation of altered subjectivity in
  49. writing. It treats Frame's body of work a written entity characterised by an
  50. elaboration of the procedures and concepts through which subjective change can be
  51. understood. Another movement of double becoming is presented in the movement by
  52. which the praxis of each successive book forms'a 'theoretical&quot; base for further praxis
  53. in the work that follows.
  54.
  55. Chapter Four approaches the relation of a reading/writing collective to this
  56. transformative theorising of subjectivity through a writing practice. The chapter '
  57. begins by considering ways in which Frame gives voice to the connection of writing
  58. to the collective, tracing her characters' articuilation of a responsibility to speak before
  59. those who have been unable to do so. It goes on to consider the reflex of this. doubling
  60. of Frame's becoming,through responses of the collective to herwork.
  61. Chapter Five comprises a collection of poems written as part of the thesis, enacting
  62. and meditating on ways my own theoretical and writing practices have modified one
  63. another in the process of thinking and writing. The poems are also a direct response to
  64. Frame's work, thus forming an extension of the previous chapter's considerations of
  65. collectivity in reading/writing.

The&#13;
  243. introduction describes the inception of the project in a study of writing practiceS&#13;
  244. among'a group of fiction writers, which identifies a process of self-transformation as&#13;
  245. an experience common to members of the group. Having identified this experience as&#13;
  246. the subject of study for a thesis,it gives a rationale for a choice of the work of&#13;
  247. poet and novelist Janet Frame,in that she enacts through her writing a process of &#13;
  248. subjective change that embodies the self-transformation identified as integral to &#13;
  249. creative practice. The introduction also signals the project of reading the work of&#13;
  250. Midhel de Certeau, and Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari alongside that of Frame, as&#13;
  251. theorists who offer approaches to understanding subjective trasformation.&#13;
  252. &#13;
  253. Chapter One places the work of Frame alongside that of the literary theorist and&#13;
  254. philosopher Michil de Certeau as a way of reading motivation in Frames's work. This&#13;
  255. chapter conducts a thematic survey of the novels' concerns with experiences of &#13;
  256. subjective confinement, using Certeau's figuration of language structures as sites of&#13;
  257. constraint and subversion, and linking Frame's response with Certeau's ideas of&#13;
  258. tactics and strategies.&#13;
  259. &#13;
  260. Chapter Two surveys the work of the philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari . .&#13;
  261. on processes of creative thought as they relate to narratorial practices in Frame's&#13;
  262. novels, and relates her project to their concept of becoming, via the genre of minor&#13;
  263. literature. The chapter presents an argument that Frame's writing enacts a double&#13;
  264. becoming in that her creation of altered subjective space for herself also creates&#13;
  265. possibilities of collective change.&#13;
  266. &#13;
  267. Chapter Three conducts a chronological survey of Frame's novels, identifying&#13;
  268. structural elements and linguistic approaches to the creation of altered subjectivity in&#13;
  269. writing. It treats Frame's body of work a written entity characterised by an&#13;
  270. elaboration of the procedures and concepts through which subjective change can be&#13;
  271. understood. Another movement of double becoming is presented in the movement by&#13;
  272. which the praxis of each successive book forms'a 'theoretical" base for further praxis&#13;
  273. in the work that follows.&#13;
  274. &#13;
  275. Chapter Four approaches the relation of a reading/writing collective to this&#13;
  276. transformative theorising of subjectivity through a writing practice. The chapter '&#13;
  277. begins by considering ways in which Frame gives voice to the connection of writing&#13;
  278. to the collective, tracing her characters' articuilation of a responsibility to speak before&#13;
  279. those who have been unable to do so. It goes on to consider the reflex of this. doubling&#13;
  280. of Frame's becoming,through responses of the collective to herwork.&#13;
  281. &#13;
  282. Chapter Five comprises a collection of poems written as part of the thesis, enacting&#13;
  283. and meditating on ways my own theoretical and writing practices have modified one&#13;
  284. another in the process of thinking and writing. The poems are also a direct response to&#13;
  285. Frame's work, thus forming an extension of the previous chapter's considerations of&#13;
  286. collectivity in reading/writing.&#13;
  287. &#13;
  288. The conclusion summarises the movement of ideas throughout the thesis using&#13;
  289. Frame's references to-point of view as a structuring device.</p></div><table style="margin-bottom: 1em" cellpadding="3" class="not_ep_block" border="0"><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Item Type:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">Thesis (PhD)</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Subjects:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row"><a href="http://eprints.utas.edu.au/view/subjects/420101.html">420000 Language and Culture &gt; 420100 Language Studies &gt; 420101 English</a></td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">ID Code:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">2279</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Deposited By:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row"><span class="ep_name_citation"><span class="person_name">MS Heather Excell</span></span></td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Deposited On:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">22 Oct 2007 11:47</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Last Modified:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">09 Jan 2008 02:30</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">ePrint Statistics:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row"><a target="ePrintStats" href="/es/index.php?action=show_detail_eprint;id=2279;">View statistics for this ePrint</a></td></tr></table><p align="right">Repository Staff Only: <a href="http://eprints.utas.edu.au/cgi/users/home?screen=EPrint::View&amp;eprintid=2279">item control page</a></p>
